Fashion Brands - How to Resist Fast Fashion.

Fast fashion. Pollutes the Earth. Makes unsafe working conditions. And is almost unavoidable.
So, here's a guide to how to avoid fast fashion.

Step one - Know what brands to avoid.

This is the most obvious and most effective advice. If you see an add about a brand talking about the cheap prices, it is probably a fast fashion brand. If something is "too good to be true" it isn't true. Do not buy a $5 dress from anywhere that isn't a thrift or secondhand store.

Brands to avoid:
1. Shein- Along with being low-quality, Shein provides unsafe and honestly inhumane working conditions for its employees. Shein is a terrible business that too many people are customers of. Just please don't buy from them, and if you see someone you know buying from them, don't be afraid of being annoying. Be annoying and tell them everything wrong with Shein.
2. Temu- "No one will buy our stuff cause they think its fake!" This is one reason why people don't buy from Temu. But that is not the main reason why you shouldn't buy from Temu (even though that is a reason). Temu is Shein. Not literally, but it functions the same. It is a fast fashion (and other stuff) business that produces an astronomical amount of waste, and provides unsafe working
conditions for it's employees.
3. Cider- Bad for the same reasons as Shein.
4. Mango- Fast fashion.
5. H & M- Reported sexual harassment to female employees, as well as producing a large amount of environmental waste.
6. Urban Outfitters
7. Forever 21
8. Boohoo
9. Misguided
10. Zara
This is a very small list of problematic fashion brands, and I would recommend doing research yourself to find out where you want to make the commitment to not shop.
If you see a brand that you aren't sure is ethical, think to yourself: "Are they advertising how cheap and trendy the clothes are?" If a brand always has an item for the latest trend, it is most likely participating in fast fashion, which takes a large toll on the environment. Another way to check is to go to Good On You, a website that rates the sustainability of brands.

Where should I buy from?

Buying from small businesses is one of the easiest ways to buy sustainable clothing. Try to not buy clothes online, since getting a package delivered to you produces CO2 which pollutes the air. But if you are going to buy online, I'd recommend Etsy, since the sellers on Etsy generally don't use factories.

Summary.

Fast fashion is bad for the environment, and, though it takes a good amount of self restraint, you should try to cut fast fashion brands out of your life. One of the easiest ways to do this is to buy from small businesses, or on Etsy. If you want to learn more about environmentalism, and the small things you can do to help our environment, I'd recommend this article about why YOU should #leavetheleaves this fall.
